The crew of the USS Zavala gathered with friends, family, and fellow crew members on October 17, 2026, to host a poignant benefit banquet and auction in memory of a beloved crewmate, Earl “Butch” Simon. Simon, a proud United States Navy veteran and master welder, passed away recently, leaving behind a profound legacy within the chapter and a lifelong passion for the Star Trek universe.
Known as a foundational benefactor to the USS Zavala, Simon was the creative force behind the large-scale, custom Star Trek props that the chapter frequently utilizes for its convention attendance and events. Simon was an avid collector of rare, one-of-a-kind memorabilia. In accordance with his final wishes, his extensive collection was put up for auction to support the next generation of explorers through the STARFLEET International Scholarship Fund.
The commemorative evening featured a full dinner, dancing, and both silent and live auctions. While the night brought moments of solemn remembrance, the atmosphere was overwhelmingly defined by joy and laughter as attendees celebrated Simon's vibrant life. The auction was a resounding success, with attendees claiming 120 out of 140 available lots.
In total, the event raised $7,000.00, which will be officially transferred to STARFLEET International in Earl’s honor by Colonel Samuel Ruby and the USS Zavala crew. Through this contribution, Simon’s dedication to the ideals of the Federation will continue to pave the way for students charting their own futures.
